Lesson 3: Keys: R and I

Directions: Follow the steps listed below along with the teacher's instructions.
Notice: The text that you are instructed to type is displayed in a Lucinda Sans Typewriter font.

LEARN

• Locate the keys on your Keyboard
• Place your fingers on the home row keys
• Reach up with your left index finger to reach the R key found above the F.
• Keep all other fingers on home row keys.
• Return your index finger to the F key.
• Reach up with your right middle finger to reach the I key found above the K.
• Keep all other fingers on home row keys.
• Return your middle finger to the K key.
• Practice your finger strokes:
• Hold your hands in the air in front of your face with your palms facing out.
• Say the name of each character.
• As you say the name, push that finger forward as if you are striking an invisible keyboard in front of you.
• Practice striking the Keys.
  • Start with R, then try I and so on.
  • Practice moving between the F and R keys.
  • Practice moving between the K and I keys
  • Now type the following lines in the air:

  r r r r frf frf frf frf; fur fur fur; jar jar jar;
  i i i i kik kik kik kik; irk irk irk; sir sir sir;

• Return your hands to the keyboard.
• Open Windows Notepad
• Maximize your window
• Go to File -- Save
  • Go to your Keyboarding Folder: Z:\\Keyboarding\
  • Name your file "Lesson03"
• Type your Name and the Date at the top of the document.
  • Press Enter 4 Times
• Type the following lines.
  • Remember to key sharply and not to hold down the key.
  • Use your thumb to strike the spacebar

    r r r r frf frf frf frf; fur fur fur; jar jar jar;
    i i i i kik kik kik kik; irk irk irk; sir sir sir;

REVIEW

• Save your file: File -- Save
• Remember to extend your right little finger out to the Enter Key
• Type each line twice. Double space after each 2-line group..:

  fff jjj ddd kkk sss lll aaa ;;; ded juj ded juj eu
  ale elk jud use jake dues fuel fuse fake sulk jade
  ask sue; a full fee; use a desk; see a jade flask;
  a lad sees; a lad sees a duel; jud sells us seeds;
  see us; sue sees us; use a desk; use a full flask;

STRETCH BREAK

• Take a minute to stretch out
  • Stand up
  • Bend down and touch your toes
  • Stretch your arms above your head
  • Stretch your arms out to your sides
  • Flex your fingers

PRACTICE: R

• Save your file: File -- Save
• Practice reaching from F to R without moving your other fingers.
• When you can reach to R without looking:
  • Type the following lines 2 times each. Double-Space after each 2-line group:

    r r r r frf frf frf frf; fur fur fur; jar jar jar;
    frf frf frf are are are; ark ark ark; red red red;
    frf frf frf rue rue rue; ear ear ear; ref ref ref;
    frf frf frf era era era; ere ere ere; far far far;
    red ark fur rue jar ref ear raj era are ruse lurk;

PRACTICE: I

• Save your file: File -- Save
• Practice reaching from K to I without moving your other fingers.
• When you can reach to K without looking:
  • Type the following lines 2 times each. Double-Space after each 2-line group:

    i i i i kik kik kik kik; irk irk irk; sir sir sir;
    kik kik kik kid kid kid; air air air; fir fir fir;
    kik kik kik rid rid rid; ail ail ail; lid lid lid;
    kik kik kik die die die; aid aid aid; lie lie lie;
    air fir kid sir rid rue lid lie aid ail sail jail;

SKILLS BOOSTER

1. Save your file: File -- Save
2. Type each line three times.
3. Practice words that have errors.
4. Try for a PERFECT copy of both lines.:

   all is fair; sell us jars; a kid used a real idea;
   fill a jar; fill a red jar; fill all red jars full

STRETCH BREAK

EXTRA PRACTICE

1. Save your file: File -- Save
2. If you have extra time after completing the assigned task:
   1. Enter twice after the end of the text in your current document
   2. Type the heading EXTRA PRACTICE in all Capital letters
   3. Enter twice more after typing the heading
   4. Repeat the lines from the current lesson
   5. Repeat step 4 if necessary
3. Use your imagination to develop 10 lines of text using the keys that you have learned up to this point.

FINISH UP

1. Double-check that your name and the date is at the top of the page
2. Save your file: File -- Save
3. Print to Lab Printer
   1. DO NOT go to printer to pick it up.Your instructor will pick up all pages at once.
