Question:

You have now read the twenty-fifth chapter of Farmer Boy. In those days, groups of hired men would travel around the farming communities with big threshing machines. Farmers would hire the men to come to their farm and thresh their grain. The farmer would often provide the workers with room and board while they worked on their farm. Then, when the workers finished, they would travel on to the next farm. Almanzo wondered why Father didn't have a threshing machine come to thresh their grain. Father said that "Haste makes waste". According to Father, the treshing machine wasted the straw. He said that lazy men were only interested in getting the work done, and so they hired the threshing machine to get the work done quickly. Father was interested in getting all of the product from the grain that he could and he did not want anything wasted. He also pointed out that the threshing by hand kept them from being bored on long winter nights.

Do you agree with Father, that the threshing machine was the "lazy man's way"? Compare how Almanzo and Father threshed the wheat to how a threshing machine would do the work (you may need to do some research! ☺ ) Include some advantages and some disadvantages about the threshing machine. Explain your answer. Non-detailed responses will NOT be accepted.
